What August Teaches Us About Returning to Ourselves and Finding Our Way Back To Healthy Routines

It’s not really just “back-to-school” season but also back-to-you season. We’re ready to help you unpack what’s next and create a plan for a healthy and refreshed you.
There's a specific feeling that shows up every year around this time. The pool days start to feel a little less urgent. The stores put out notebooks and lunchboxes before you're ready to think about it. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a quiet voice starts asking: okay, what's the plan now?
We call it "back to school season", but if you really sit with it, August isn't just about school but rather about routine and structure. It's about coming back to the version of yourself that got a little loose around the edges over the summer...not because anything went wrong, but because summer isn't supposed to have edges. It's supposed to be soft, unplanned and even a little bit messy.
And now it's time to come back.
Summer Gives Us Permission to Let Go
Think about what summer actually asked of you: Skip the blowout, the humidity's going to win anyway!
Let the kids stay up late!
Eat the ice cream before dinner!
Say yes to the last-minute weekend trip!
Summer isn't lazy, it's permission. Permission to loosen your grip on the schedule, the streaks, the routines that usually keep you upright the other nine months of the year.
That's not a flaw in the season but rather the whole amazing point of it.
But permission to let go only works if there's something to come back to, and that's where August earns its reputation. Let's make this more than just the "back to school" month, but also the "back to you" month.
Getting yourself back into a routine isn't a restriction. It's a relationship with yourself.
Somewhere along the way, routine got a bad reputation. It sounds rigid. Boring. Like something to escape rather than return to. But talk to anyone who's gone through a genuinely hard season of life, and they'll usually tell you the same thing: routine was what held them together. Not because it was exciting, but because it was theirs. A small, repeatable act of choosing themselves, on purpose, on a regular basis.
Your hair routine is one of the more overlooked versions of this. It's easy to write off a haircut or a color refresh as vanity, or as something extra, something you'll "get to eventually." But think about the last time you sat in the chair after a stretch of neglecting yourself...work stress, a move, a hard season, a summer schedule that ran you ragged. You didn't just leave with different hair. You left standing up a little straighter. Looking people in the eye a little more easily. Feeling, for lack of a better word, like you again.
A Few Honest Questions to Ask Yourself This Month
If you're feeling that quiet "what's the plan now" voice too, here are a few things worth sitting with before you fill your calendar back up:
1. What did I let go of this summer that I actually want back? Not everything needs reviving. But some things do.
2. What's one small, repeatable thing that makes me feel like myself? It doesn't have to be big. It just has to be consistently yours.
3. Where have I stopped making time for myself, and why? Be honest. Most of us can name the exact moment.
4. What would it feel like to walk into fall already feeling like me, instead of trying to catch up to that feeling in October?
If part of your "back to me" plan includes getting your hair back to feeling like you, whether that's a color refresh, a cut that actually works with your life again, or just an hour of being taken care of... we'd love to be part of that.
Both Haven of Harrisburg & Fever of Hershey were built around the same idea that this isn't just a place you go for a haircut. Our spaces are where you go to remember who you are underneath the last few busy months. Our team listens first, plans with you, and sends you back out into your routine feeling like the most put-together version of yourself, not just because your hair is different, but because you finally made time for you.
Ready to make that appointment you've been meaning to make since June?
We'll take it from here.
We're with you as you enter your season of getting back to you again. As always...
